HISTORY

The Katipunan Philippines Cultural Academy (KAPHILCA) was inspired by the idea that young Filipinos overseas must never become alienated from their native land; they must know about their Filipino identity and culture, and must be given the best opportunity to learn about the Philippines and its people.

The KAPHILCA was established in 1997 to provide affordable formal education to dependents of overseas Filipino workers in Greece. It was borne of a vision shared by the Philippine Embassy in Athens, the Filipino community in Greece, and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, with a start-up contribution from the President’s Social Fund and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. The school was given accreditation by the Department of Education of the Philippines on 26 October 1999. Since the school follows the curriculum prescribed by the DepEd, it enables students to be readily integrated into the Philippine school system on their return to the country, and to cultivate in them their Filipino identity and character.

In September 2006, the KAPHILCA was re-established and became fiscally stronger with the merger of the pre-school from the PLC, the KAPHILCA elementary and the unrecognized high school. The KAPHILCA has been re-named as the Philippine School in Greece (PSG).

In the same month, the PSG through its present principal was able to acquire a temporary permit issued by the (Greek) Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs for the operation of pre-school and primary education only.

The DepEd issued a Government Recognition on 15 December 2009 to the school’s pre-elementary and elementary level while a Provisional Government Permit was given to the secondary level of the PSG.

The pre-school and elementary level education of the PSG-KAPHILCA was given permit by the Greek Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs through Note Verbal F 4956/44 AS 2032, dated 15 November 2006, addressed to the Philippine Embassy in Athens.

The secondary level has been recognized by the Greek government as stated in the Law 4186/2013 which was published in the Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic on 17 September 2013 which contains a list of recognized General Lyceums or secondary level educational institutions.

To date, with the expertise, dynamic and able leadership of the new school administrators, who are private individuals, together with the competent and dedicated teachers, the PSG remains committed to provide quality education that is essential in shaping the future of the Filipino migrants’ children in Greece.
